Shandy Dawkins, a good friend, fisherman, and local farmer and rancher from Strachan Hill (near the salt pond by Bennett’s Harbour) here on Cat Island passed away November 18, 2018 after diving. He was air lifted to Nassau and passed in the hospital shortly afterwards. Shandy was forty-three and is survived by his wife, Shawana, and 4 children. A Funeral service in Nassau is planned for December 8th at 10AM at the New Destiny Baptist Church with a Memorial Service on Cat Island on December 9th, starting at 3PM at The Church of God in Dumfries. After the services Shandy’s ashes will be scattered in the waters off Bennett’s Harbour, Cat Island.

Anna and Sandro Leipold, homeowners at Pigeon Cay, suggested a memorial fund be started for Shandy’s family to help with the costs of the emergency air flight as well as for his funeral and his family. A PayPal account using our Pigeon Cay Homeowners Association has been setup to accept donations to the Shandy Dawkins Memorial Fund. The Donate Button below can be clicked to make whatever donation you are able to.

All donations will be kept confidential, and the total funds collected will be reported below on this webpage.

Shandy did so much for Cat Island and was always actively working and serving others. His smile was contagious under his dreadlocks. Shandy had an previous diving incident earlier this year and spent several weeks in Nassau recovering at that time. Shandy has done work for many of the homeowners here and was to help with the culverts to be added to the access road into Pigeon Cay. He helped in the refurbishing of the Arthur’s Town Community Play Park in 2014 and assisted in removing the sand barge wreck from the Orange Creek estuary in 2012 to name just a couple.

May we all pause and give thanks for family, for friends, for life, for health and the relative prosperity so many of us enjoy. And if you can, please donate to help Shandy’s family. Sandro Leipold will help oversee the donations and ensure they are given to Shandy’s wife, Shawana.
