Dear Subscriber,
I’ve heard further from Miriam regarding the impact of Dorian on our part of the island. While the storm was sitting on Grand Bahamas for almost 48 hours, the outer bands of Dorian brought lots of rain, wind and thunderstorms to our beach. The power has been going in and out and was out the longest period last night. When asked if Donaldson’s had any damage from the stormy weather over the past few days, they reported no structures were damaged and landscaping and flora were intact. The seas were extremely rough with good sized waves coming onshore. As of this afternoon Miriam reported the storm appeared to be abating.
Now that Dorian has started moving northwest, away from Grand Bahamas island, the loss of life, homes, businesses, land and flora can begin to be assessed and relief brought in to help. This is the first time I can remember over the last 21 years, that lives were lost during a hurricane in the Bahamas. Your continuing thoughts and prayers are requested. We’ll inform you when we learn of any relief efforts in which we may be able to assist those who lost everything in this terrible storm.
Tropical Depression 8 off the west coast of Africa is developing into a tropical storm with sustained winds of 35 mph and traveling northwest at 8 mph, with current projections showing it going far north of the Bahamas, but that can change as we’ve just witnessed this past week. Tropical Storm Fernand in the Gulf of Mexico is heading southwest and doesn’t pose a threat to the Bahamas. Disturbance 2, hundreds of miles to the northeast of the Bahamas, is likely to develop further, but is moving north, away from us, and may threaten Bermuda. For the latest status on Atlantic storms please check the National Hurricane Center. We’ll be watching the weather and storms for possible impacts to our return trip to Cat Island in a couple of weeks.
Thank you again to Jack and Miriam for keeping us abreast of the situation on our beach.
Warm Regards, James and Victoria Honeycutt
