Read about the Kirtland Warbler on Cat Island in The Audubon Society’s webpage here. After bouncing back from near extinction, the Kirtland’s Warbler is helping scientists understand the outsize role of winter habitat for migratory birds.
The Kirtland Warbler Team will be making a presentation at this year’s Cat Island’s Earth Day celebration on April 21st held at the Arthur’s Town Square Park next to the High School. Visit Cat Island United for more information coming soon.
We’re making progress on adding culverts to the main entrance to Pigeon Cay to restore the brackish pond on the left side by connecting it back to the salt creek. This effort will eventually restore the mangroves that have died, reduce mosquito populations in the immediate vicinity and reduce flooding on the access road. We’ve cleared the project with local government and the land owner and are awaiting clearances from Bahamas Power and Light and Batelco to ensure there are no buried utilities that could be disturbed by the trenching. The entire project is estimated to be under $1000BD. Look for an update soon.
WhatsApp, a free calling and messaging application for Android and iPhone is growing in popularity among locals and visitors alike on Cat Island. It’s a great way to extend the use of your smartphone using WiFi signals from your DSL router or even Batelco’s Cellular Data if your home cellular provider has a reasonable roaming data plan. And messages are encrypted end-to-end.
When’s the tide going to be low? is a common question when trying to plan a beach walk. Now there’s an app for that Tides Near Me available on both Android and iPhone. It also includes sun and moon rising and setting times as well as the moon’s phases so you can plan the perfect moonlight beach walk at your preferable tide levels. New Bight is the nearest tide reference point for Pigeon Cay.
We hope to see you soon on Cat Island and wish you a gloriously beautiful day.
Warm Regards,
James Honeycutt
